Hair System Sizing & Measurement Guide (Step by Step)

How to measure your head for a hair system, read standard base sizes, and make an accurate template for custom orders — so your system fits flush with no slipping or gaps.

Fit is non-negotiable. A system that's too large slides and lifts at the edges; too small and you get gaps where your own hair shows through. This guide shows you how to measure correctly, read standard sizes, and make a template if you're ordering custom.

Quick answer

Most ready-to-wear men's systems come in a standard 8” × 10” base that's cut down to fit during attachment. What matters is the area of hair loss you need to cover and the shape of your front hairline. If your loss pattern is unusual or you want an exact contour, measure for a custom base.

What you'll need

  • A flexible tape measure (or string + ruler)
  • Clear tape and plastic wrap or a thin freezer bag (for a template)
  • A washable marker
  • A mirror, or a helper for accuracy

Step 1: Measure the area of loss

Measure the balding/thinning area you want the system to cover, front to back and side to side, in inches. Add about 0.5 to 1” of margin beyond the edge of the loss so the system attaches onto a stable area. Note the two numbers (length × width).

Step 2: Map your front hairline

Decide where your new hairline will sit. A natural men's hairline is roughly 4 finger-widths (about 7 to 8 cm) above the eyebrows at the center and curves back at the temples. Don't set it too low: a low, straight hairline is the most common unnatural look. Mark the line lightly so you can transfer it to a template.

Step 3: Make a template (for custom orders)

A template captures the exact shape and curvature of your head so a custom base fits flush:

  1. Cover the area with plastic wrap, pressing it to the scalp's contour.
  2. Cover the wrap completely with overlapping strips of clear tape to lock the shape.
  3. With a marker, trace the outline of the area to cover and the front hairline shape.
  4. Mark hair direction with arrows (how your hair flows) and note any part location.
  5. Carefully cut the template off and lay it flat to confirm the shape, then send it with your order.

Standard base sizes vs custom

Option How it fits Best for
Stock 8” × 10” Trimmed down at attachment Typical crown/top loss, fastest option
Custom base Made to your template & contour Unusual loss patterns, exact hairline, partial pieces

Buying stock vs custom is a bigger decision than size alone: see stock vs custom hair systems.

Common measuring mistakes

  • No margin: measuring only the bald spot leaves no stable area to attach to.
  • Hairline too low or too straight: looks unnatural: keep it ~4 finger-widths up with temple recession.
  • Forgetting hair direction: always mark flow and part on a custom template.
  • Measuring over thick existing hair: measure against the scalp for accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard hair system size?

8” × 10” is the standard base, trimmed to fit during attachment. It covers most crown and top-of-head loss.

How high should the hairline be?

About four finger-widths (7 to 8 cm) above the eyebrows at the center, curving back at the temples.

Do I need a template?

Only for custom orders or unusual loss patterns. Stock systems are cut to fit at attachment.

Once your system fits, learn to apply it cleanly in our step-by-step attachment guide, or order an exact fit with a custom hair system.
